Scientists discover possible parasite that is attacking honeybees

Tens of thousands of bees disappear every year from hives at Bruce Paquette’s Wausau home and greenhouse, and every year, he pays hundreds of dollars to replace them so he can harvest honey for gifts and to alleviate his allergies.Neither Paquette nor other beekeepers and scientists have been able to explain precisely why so many bees have been dying or disappearing in recent years, but northern California scientists recently discovered a possible culprit for the decimation of hives around the world, known as colony collapse disorder: a parasitic fly that hijacks the bees’ bodies and causes them to abandon hives.
