Tajemnica szkła kobaltowego: Christoph Schürer i jego Eulenhütte

Technologię wytwarzania niebieskiego szkła („szkła kobaltowego”) opracował ok. roku 1536-1540 Christoph Schürer, syn Asmusa Schürera, członek słynnej rodziny szklarskiej, w hucie szkła zwanej Eulenhütte w czeskich Rudawach (czes. Krušné hory, niem. Erzgebirge).

„The invention of a European smalt process is sometimes credited to a Bohemian glassmaker named Christoph Schurer, around 1540-1560″ – podaje angielska wikipedia w artykule o smalcie.

Chemicznie smalta to czysty krzemian kobaltowo-potasowy.

I w przypisie:

Działała ona w okolicy wsi w XIV/XV-XVIII w. Jej ślady w postaci żużlowisk widoczne są do dzisiaj”… (t. I Góry Izerskie, s. 33).

„Christoph Schürer finds the blue dye
a legend from Schneeberg in the ore mountains
When in the 16th century the mountain’s blessing of the upper ore mountains diminished annually and everywhere a wail rose over the silver robber, as cobalt was called, came Christoph Schürer, a pharmacist’s son from Westphalia, to Schneeberg, where he soon found employment at the huts, as he was well-experienced in chemistry.
A few days after his arrival, he won the love of Anna, the daughter of the overseer Rau, and he soon received her fathers blessing through his appealing demeanor, so that the wedding was scheduled for the next mountain festival.
But before the festival day arrived, his hopes almost were destroyed. In his chemical research, it occurred to him to use the infamous cobalt to make something useful. He therefore secretly performed many experiments in a smelter in Oberschlema and worked so eagerly and often throughout the night that he soon fell under suspicion of being an alchemist and black wizard. Therefore, when multiple complaints about him being a magician and thief poured in from Bohemia, where people had a grudge for him for his knowledge, the mountain master was asked to arrest and extradite him.
Schürer just worked in the foundry with his experiments, there came the beadle to arrest him. But they found the outer door closed and reported this to the mountain master. He, the overseer Rau and some jurors now became curious and went along.
The door was forced open, and there was the wanted man – eyes sparkling with joy. But he was astonished when they attack him and forced him into the handcuffs! How shocked he was when he was accused to be a magician and thief! Christoph Schürer quickly said with a firm voice: “Men think before they decide! If you think I use evil black art, so come forward! See, this I wanted to win, and thankfully it’s finally succeeded! I mean, it should be of great benefit to the country!” With these words he handed them a tray full of fine, fine blue dust flour. The mine owners were amazed, and desired to know how and from what he had prepared such a beautiful blue color. Schürer showed them and cleansed himself of the suspicion that he was a magician.
This gave the mountain master such great joy that he promised to do everything possible to prove his innocence against the charges against him. The brave man succeeded soon, and Christoph Schürer received his freedom. Through the invention of blue color that first was only called “Blue Wonder”, but later called “Schmalt”, he came to great honor, and when the mountain festival came he became the happy overseer’s son-in-law.

Czyżby więc chromiecka huta szkła była nieznaną dotąd hutą Schürerów?
